Don’t try and fool me with fish

In England cod reigns supreme. Deep fried and battered.  Yet, with the decline of both cod and the local fish’n’chip shop, you could be fooled to thinking otherwise. I used to work at, what can only be described as, an over-glorified fish and chip restaurant, in the heart of London. I was a receptionist-slash-waitress-slash-verbal-punching-bag for management. It’s still there today. Its almost become an institution. God help us. Local business men with meetings, high society types  and foreign travelers, would all descend on the place, seeking (supposedly) ‘the best fish and chips experience’ in London. But for £15 and upwards, not including service charge for extras. You can get stuffed. I don’t mean that in the happy go lucky “eat till your full” way. I mean it in the classic, “even if I had gold dripping out of my nose, I still wouldn’t” way. In the whole time I had worked there, I had tried it once. Seeing how they mostly fed us overcooked pasta and some rice (I was forever bloated), you can imagine the built-up anticipation, before that very first bite.. …

Some days I want to pack in all in, and get on the first flight back to London. I’m loath to admit it, but I am still that very same petulant teenager that used to sew buttons and badges onto her blazer, in protest of the over-strict (and to this day foolish) uniforms policy. I am chaos at its best. Now, however, the grown up, more mature version of me, has more sway and is finally able to calm me down. Let’s just say that I had an incident two days ago, that stung my already fragile sense of self. It reminded me of how much I stuck out here, that I may never assimilate, but more importantly, that I may never fit in; the way I want. Bangkok Discoveries #2: Koji Suzuki and the Sushi that Saved Me

[Updated 11/07/2015 : I have since been informed that Koji’s place in Ekkamai has shut down. I’ve contacted Koji and am waiting to find out more] My head is on fire and my nose is runny, but were it not for the kindness of the owner of 男の割, Koji Suzuki, I would not have had the strength to write this. I was thwarted once…  My first attempt at a ‘Flourless Gluten Free Chocolate Cake’ was a disaster. And how could I have been victorious, with a drawn out name like that? What can I say? I expected too much from this recipe. In hindsight, I admit that I had put too much pressure on myself. I just wanted to have some more material for my channel. Lesson learned. Here’s take two. Tada! Its floppy. Its a little beat up. All the best things in life are. How to Follow Your Passion Even if You Don’t Know What It Is

I, personally, am tired of people giving advice like, “just follow your passion,” or “do what you love and the money will come.” If you’re one of the (very few) Millennials out there who knows exactly what you want to do with your life, and you’re taking conscious, consistent steps toward it… then by all means, continue to follow your passion! Bangkok Discoveries Series #1: Below Eleven.

My friends at university would chuckled when I’d invite them to the local farmers market back in London. The usual excuses would come up about it being expensive… blah blah blah “I’d hate to go all Gwyneth Paltrow on you, but if you’re willing to spend £12 at Pret for your coffee, BLT and a cheesecake, even with their paltry sizes, you can quite easily eat better quality food at the local farmer’s market.” Posh food it ain’t! But out here in Bangkok where fresh produce is cheap and plentiful, I hadn’t given too much thought to the farmer’s market. My visit over the weekend changed my mind. Although it was dominated by foreigners (farang in Thai), the food on offer stood out in a league of its own. “Hunger Games”

I don’t know what possessed me to check, but now that I know it cannot be undone. To put it simply, this: Is the enemy. All these years, what a fool I have been. Before I went to see the Hunger Games: Mockingjay, a movie that I can only describe as  cripplingly melodramatic, I decided to check the amount of calories in my cinema popcorn. Cinema popcorn is overpriced and usually over-sized. But man is it good! Sticky but not soggy. How do they do it? I go about twice a year, so till now, I never gave two thoughts to it. I’ve always knew it wasn’t healthy or good for you, but I never knew just how bad it could be. Its popcorn. It should be called ingredients-list-as-long-as-my-arm-but-with-popped-corn-kernals. Before I get really into this rant, I just want to say that I’m not trying to lose weight. The Perks of Being a West African Wall Flower…. [Akara vs Acaraje]

I love watching travel shows. Soon after they’re done, I close my eyes, and imagine that I’m magically transported there. Right in the center of it all. To date, my two favorite travel show hosts, in this wonderful mix of TV and my zany imagination, are: the straight shooting Anthony Bourdain, and the irresistible Errol Barnett (what a smile). Its my adult version of make believe; but its something that has always gotten me through tough times. I have no complaints. Except for…. Whenever I read or hear people discuss “African cuisine”, they only mention Morocco. Why only Morocco? This happens often, and when it does, a weird feeling comes seeping out of me. I’ve been told I make a fart face, then, as soon as it appears, I suppress it. Its a hard feeling to describe, but its an unhealthy mixture of pity, shame, annoyance, and the sting of frustration.
